Utada Hikaru is often considered the Britney Spears of Japanese music. But unlike Britney, fans actually like Hikaru. Born in 1983, she's grown up with music all around her. Both of her parents were musicians. Her father was a producer and her mother was an enka (Japanese ballad singer).

Being born in New York City and raised part-time in Japan has been very beneficial to Hikaru. She is extremely fluent in both Japanese and English. She started writing English lyrics at the age of ten. Her signature song, "Hikari" / "Simple and Clean", in Square's Kingdom Hearts video game, was sung in both languages and has become very popular among game music fans. As she tries to make her presence more known in the United States, she is already a sensation in Japan.

Her debut album, First Love, sold unbelievably well. Sold out in every record store before its official release date, it became the most popular album in Japanese music history, selling well over 9 million copies, which is quite an accomplishment for someone so young. Her current albums are selling just as fast.

She is in 2004 Genuine World Record - she is the only artist whose 3 consecutive albums had been sold over 2 million copies.
